Chronology of Violations against MP Ahmed Said Hashid
Hashid is committed to equality in constitutional and legal issues, a fact demonstrated through his positions and advocacy of rights and freedoms. Such actions exposed the man to a series of attacks and legal violations, as well as arbitrary procedures by the authorities, among of that.
2003
Mr. Hashid survived a politically motivated assassination attempt in 2003 in which his driver was killed. The attack came after Mr. Hasid wrote a report exposing the conditions of Yemeni prisons. Mr. Hashid was unable to obtain judicial redress for the incident as mandated by the constitution.. Read more
March 2006
In March 2006, Mr. Hashid received a variety of death threats at al-Mostakela newspaper. Various individuals indirectly linked to the ruling party used religious incitement against his paper and its staff to provoke popular sentiment.. Read more
October 2006
In October 2006, Mr. Hashid was arbitrarily detained by the Political Security after participating in a sit-in in solidarity with detained human rights activists. In addition to several arbitrary arrests and detentions, Mr. Hashid has also been subjected to physical abuse and death threats warning him to cease his advocacy efforts and investigations of prisoner abuses.. In November 2006, Parliament began proceedings to investigate the arrest of Mr. Hashid. The investigation failed to consider Mr. Hashid’s evidence and was clearly politicized.. Read more
June 2007
In June 2007, Mr. Hashid was beaten severely by a military official, Major al-Jabadi, and three other soldiers who took turns kicking and beating him. They tied his hands and threatened to kill him over his visit to Passport Authority offices where the attack took place. Mr. Hashid has been unable to bring the perpetrators to justice. November 2007
Mr. Hashid was physically prevented from visiting the Political Security jail in Dhamar in late 2007 in the course of his Parliamentary duties.. Read more

The parliamentarian was prevented from touring the military police jail in Hodeidah, and was subjected to badmouthing and contempt by the jail’s prison guards in 2007.. Read more
He is threatened to draw his immunity on a charge of showing hostility towards the National Union which is as usual being taken as a pretext for all types of violence against politicians and defenders of Rights in Yemen.
Hashid proved to be brave enough to reveal hidden facts and information during his interviews with journalists, thereby forcing ruling party MPs to demand the Parliament’s presidential board to withdraw his immunity. February 2008
In February 2008, Hr. Hashid was accused of apostasy by fellow members of Parliament in a televised session of Parliament. They demanded his paper be shut down and Mr. Hashid’s Parliamentary immunity be withdrawn. The MPs filed a complaint to the Attorney General against Mr. Hashid, accusing him of violating national principles and Islamic sharia in the various articles published by his newspaper.. Read more

Furthermore nearly a dozen members of the al-Tagheer organization, founded by Mr. Hashid, have arbitrarily arrested and are in jail. Among the most notable is Abdulkarim Al-Khaiwani who was sentenced to six years in jail in a trial widely recognized by international observers as a politicized use of the judiciary in retribution for a published article..
